Wilmington, NC – Richard Cathey, III Killed in S. College Rd. Hit-and-Run

Wilmington, NC (May 1, 2021) – A 26-year-old man was killed in a hit-and-run crash in Wilmington early Saturday morning. The collision took place just after 2:00 a.m. on South College Road near the intersection with Wilshire Boulevard.

The Wilmington Police Department responded to the accident scene after receiving a report of a hit-and-run. According to officers, Richard Wayne Cathey, III was walking westbound on South College Road when he was struck by a black vehicle. The vehicle did not stop at the scene. When rescue crews arrived, they found Cathey lying in the roadway with critical injuries. He was taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center where he was later pronounced dead. Police have not provided any further details on the vehicle or the suspect.
